Lanzarote is an ideal destination for anyone who likes to combine sunbathing by the pool with a spot of sightseeing. As the island boasts a host of natural wonders, breathtaking beaches, unique man made creations and picturesque towns and villages. So if you are staying in one of our Lanzarote holiday villas make sure you take the time to tour and explore this fascinating island.
Beaches
Which is the best beach on the island? Beauty as they say is in the eye of the beholder. But few would argue that Lanzarote boasts a number of stunning stretches of sand.
Amongst our favourites are the huge beach at Famara on the islands rugged North West coast. A favourite hang out with surfers and fantastic during the summer and autumn months. During the depths of winter though the trade winds make this beach very breezy. So head south like the swallows at this time of the year and explore the coves and bays at Papagayo, located just outside Playa Blanca. The beaches here are all interconnected – so you can hop from one to the other throughout the day.
Manrique Magic
The name Cesar Manrique is virtually synonymous with Lanzarote. And rightly so. As this creative Canarian helped to shape the controlled development of tourism on the island. Whilst also creating unique attractions such as the Mirador del Rio, Jameos del Agua and the Cactus Garden.
Our favourite spot is the Cesar Manrique Foundation – which was the artist’s former home and studio. Which was constructed over five bubbles in the lava flow. The Foundation is open daily from 10.00 to 19.00 (15.00 on Sundays) and costs just €8.
Another of his creations that doesn’t get quite so much attention as others is the Museo del Campesino, located in the heart of the island close to San Bartolome. This is an excellent sot for a bit of lunch as they serve good value taps upstairs whilst there’s a more formal restaurant downstairs. And visitors can also view local artisans at work and pick up good quality souvenirs.
Towns and Villages
One of the best ways to explore Lanzarote is to simply hire a car and set off. Which will take you through a number of pretty villages – such as Yaiza and Uga in the south. And Haria and Maguez in the north.
History buffs should head for the former island capital of Teguise. As this is the oldest Spanish settlement I the Canaries and is home to some wonderful colonial buildings such as the Palacio Spinola. Which is open to the public as a house museum.
